WA drinks industry embraces connectivity

The WA Chapter of the Embrace Difference Council has hosted a successful pre-Xmas networking evening with the theme “Embrace Connectivity”.

It was another sold-out event for WA, with 83 people in attendance, representing suppliers, associations, and retailers. 

Held at new Perth venue The Shoe, proceedings commenced with an introduction detailing the change from Woman In Drinks to Embrace Difference.

Chapter coordinators communicated the council's over-arching purpose of establishing the drinks industry as a destination of choice by facilitating awareness, challenging perceptions and building practise that attract, develop and retain talent.

This was followed by a speed networking session, which gave attendees the opportunity to spend 20 minutes getting to know a new industry colleague. The aim was to share experiences, bounce ideas, discuss challenges and form alliances with contacts at similar or different stages of their careers.

The aim was for attendees to grow through connecting and learn a little about each other and the challenges and opportunities we face every day. This process prompted lively discussions and created an electric atmosphere. 

Following the speed networking session, a panel of key WA drinks industry personnel were invited to share their personal experiences with the room.

First up was Bernard Hughes, State Manager for Asahi. Hughes was asked about his career journey and to share a key highlight. Hearing about his 40 years of experience and the lasting friendships and connections he has made during his time in the industry bought to room to a reflective silence. Hughes nominated connection as the main reason why he loves his job and has stayed in the drinks Industry.

Next was Leigh Taylor, who is currently the On Premise State Manager for Redbull. Taylor was asked about returning to a full-time role after the birth of her first son and what or who provides her strength. She talked about the important role of both formal and informal mentors across her career and how her passion for people and coaching motivates her to find that balance between being a mum and being a boss.

Finally, the co-owner of Baby Shoe Jo Higgins spoke about how the drinks industry introduced her to her soul mate and business partner and also provided them both with lifelong friends as well as the livelihood that has helped them raise a family. Higgins was emotional and raw and noted how grateful she was for everything the Industry has given her.

A promise to communicate the networking results and insights was made before people left with new connections and challenges and opportunities shared.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with the opportunity to interact with industry peers being highly valued.
