Suntory Oceania has taken home the 2026 Best Environmental Sustainability Initiative at the Australian Drinks Awards. The award recognises the Swanbank Carbon Neutral Manufacturing Facility in Queensland, which has just completed its first full year of operation.
Sustainability designed in from day one
Built as a greenfield site, Swanbank is Suntory's first "One Suntory" manufacturing and distribution hub, bringing alcohol and non-alcohol production together in a single Australian location for the first time. The site was designed from the ground up to operate as a carbon-neutral operation.
That design-first approach is delivered through a stack of low-emissions technologies working as a single system, including:
- 7,000 solar panels generating around 60% of the site's power
- a biomass boiler fuelled by renewable sawmill offcuts in place of gas
- an Organic Rankine Cycle generator converting waste heat into usable energy
- a renewable energy agreement with CleanCo
- regenerative braking in the facility's automated warehouse
At times the site generates more energy than it needs, exporting surplus renewable power back to the grid.
A parallel commitment to water
Sustainability at Swanbank extends beyond energy and emissions. The site forms part of Suntory Oceania's broader ambition to create a positive impact on water resources through research, replenishment and education initiatives. In May 2026, the company announced a $1 million, three-year partnership with Griffith University's Australian Rivers Institute to strengthen understanding of how climate change is reshaping Australia's river and catchment systems.
At the same time, Suntory Oceania is progressing a water replenishment project designed to replenish 100 per cent of the water used at the Swanbank manufacturing facility. Developed in partnership with Lockyer Valley landholders, the project aims to improve catchment health and support long-term water security for the region.
The business has also partnered with Earthwatch Australia to deliver water education programs to primary school students across South-East Queensland, helping build awareness of water stewardship and inspiring future generations to protect Australia's water resources.
Delivering on a bold commitment
The results in year one are substantial. Scope 1 and 2 emissions across Suntory Oceania have fallen 55%, even in the context of business growth. Swanbank has supported a 33% increase in production across its multi-beverage portfolio and enabled manufacturing capacity to more than triple. Seventy beverage SKUs have transitioned to the site, with two canning lines running at an industry-leading 180,000 cans per hour.
In reviewing the submission from Suntory Oceania, the judges highlighted the:
- strategic, leader-driven decision to build a fully sustainable, end-to-end operation from the outset, with the discipline to hold that line under cost pressure.
- genuinely groundbreaking carbon-neutral outcome at industrial scale, with few comparable facilities operating anywhere in the world.
- rigour behind the achievement, with sustainability embedded across the full operation rather than concentrated in a handful of initiatives.
- level of capital investment matched by an equivalent level of environmental ambition, rather than scale for its own sake.
initiative's emerging role as a blueprint for Suntory's manufacturing globally, well beyond the Australian market.
- precedent it sets for future investment, showing sustainability and large-scale growth don't need to come at each other's expense.
Jeanette Fenske, Managing Director BWS, presented the award on behalf of the sponsor, Endeavour Group, saying:
“Sustainability has become one of the defining opportunities for the drinks industry, reaching well beyond environmental impact into how businesses source, produce and operate. This year’s finalists showed a genuine commitment to sustainability with initiatives that have real impacts on people and the planet.”
Influence and recognition
Swanbank's Biomass Boiler and ORC generator technology is now being replicated at Suntory Thailand. The facility's approach of prioritising emissions reduction through design and technology ahead of offsets is informing greenfield and large-scale manufacturing decisions across the wider Suntory Group.
The facility has also picked up recognition well beyond this category, adding a string of other industry awards to its name.
“This award is a proud milestone for Suntory Oceania and recognition of our commitment to Growing for Good in Oceania,” said Ian Goldschmidt, Sustainability Director – Suntory Beverage & Food Oceania. “Our Swanbank facility demonstrates what's possible when sustainability is considered from day one, with investment in technology, infrastructure and partnerships that deliver meaningful environmental outcomes.
“As we continue to grow our multi-beverage business, we're focused on helping create a more sustainable future for our industry, customers and the communities in which we operate.”
Suntory Oceania also picked up the Best Campaign Award in the Spirits category for the Maker's Mark Perfectly Unreasonable campaign.
There was a total of 16 awards handed out at the 14th Annual Australian Drinks Awards, hosted by Edwina Bartholomew. The awards recognise achievement and excellence in the drinks industry, including three Contribution to Industry Awards: Best Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative, Best Wellbeing Initiative and Best Environmental Sustainability Initiative.
