Championing respect: Lauren Martin on fostering inclusion in the drinks industry

For Lauren Martin, Cellar Door Manager at Vinarchy, respect and inclusion are more than workplace ideals; they’re guiding values that shape every interaction.

As a proud signatory to the newly launched Respect in Drinks Charter, Vinarchy joins an industry-wide movement to create safe, inclusive, and respectful workplaces across the drinks sector. Developed by the Drinks Association Embrace Difference Council, the Charter outlines a clear set of commitments that organisations can take to build a more equitable and inclusive industry.

Lauren sees the Charter as an important and timely reminder of the values that underpin positive workplace culture.

“Respect and inclusiveness reflect my professional and personal core values, kindness and compassion,” she says. “Providing a safe environment is important and understanding that might look different for everyone is something I strive towards. I believe being curious and providing kindness can lead to growth in relationships and a better understanding of what a safe environment looks like for individuals.”

“It is important for us to remain respectful and humble in all our interactions,” she says. “This fosters positive relationships and ensures that we continue to thrive as a valued part of the wine industry.”

As a leader, Lauren recognises the impact she can have in creating a culture where people feel heard, valued and safe. Her leadership style is grounded in continuous learning and a strong sense of empathy.

“My thought process personally and professionally is guided by Ben Crowe, a life coach to many,” she explains. “I start by being the best version of myself and always strive to be the best part of someone’s day. Kindness doesn’t cost you anything. People measure success in so many ways – through their careers, how much money they earn, even where they live. But for me, success is about the way you make connections and how you keep them.”

Lauren sees the interpersonal nature of the wine industry as an opportunity to embed respect into every touchpoint, from team relationships to customer experiences. She’s also intentional about creating a workplace culture that flattens hierarchies and encourages open, honest communication.

“I believe creating a positive and open door culture in my working environment goes a long way towards fostering respect and inclusion,” she says. “I continuously work to eliminate any imbalance of power among peers, partners and customers. By doing so I aim to create a workplace where everyone feels safe enough to engage in a conversation with me about issues that may not be working for them or if they feel they or someone else is being treated disrespectfully.”

By championing the Respect in Drinks Charter, Lauren hopes to inspire others in the industry to speak up, step forward and show up for each other.

“I feel extremely grateful to have this opportunity and platform to be a voice and safe space for creating positive change,” she says. “I know that when I was younger or less experienced, I may not have had the confidence to stand up and call out disrespect. Now that I do, I see this as a great way to start making a difference and being a voice for someone who might still be trying to find theirs.”

The Drinks Association supports and encourages compliance by its members with the ‘Respect in Drinks Charter’ but makes no representations, expressly or by inference, in relation to the conduct of our members or their compliance with the Charter. The only representation made by the Association is that our member has signed the Charter. Any complaint or claim arising from any alleged breach of the Charter must be made directly to the member organisation.
